The city of Taylorsville puts on a little carnival the last weekend of June every year. Every year since we started dating, Devan and I have been out of town for it, and he's been a little upset. He doesn't care about the carnival, just the fireworks show they put on Saturday night. Every 4th of July I have to hear him whine about the fireworks that we would have seen if we were around for Taylorsville Dayzz. So, I made sure it was a priority this year, and I dragged him to the carnival on Thursday. This is all the fun stuff before the ferris wheel incident.
First we all went on the merry-go-round. Hannah didn't know what to think of it before the ride started.
Then she decided she loved it.
I spent most of the time worried she was going to slip off. Seriously, how can they not have seat belts?
Then she rode a little car. This was her first time going on a ride all by herself. She cried just a little when we first put her it, but she loved it once the ride started.
And was a little bothered when it ended.
Going down the slide with Dad...
And then Mom. I had way more fun on that one than she did.
Looks wild, huh?
She didn't care too much about the last ride. I think by that point she'd seen too much to be easily impressed.
Target wouldn't let me bring a cart into the dressing room. I have a little girl who slips under doors and runs away every time my pants are down in public. If she's not strapped in somewhere, we're in big trouble. The manager didn't care. Apparently there just isn't any way to accommodate clothing shoppers with small children. I wanted to cry.
Grievance #2
This weekend was the Taylorsville Days carnival. Thursday was $1 ride day and I really wanted to take Hannah on a ferris wheel. We went on a couple of rides and saved the ferris wheel for very last. We waited in line for 15 minutes just to have the ride operator tell me I couldn't ride it because I'm "expecting." They couldn't have put a sign up? This time I did cry. And this was after I’d gone on the giant slide, where you get a little air off of each of the 3 humps and the merry-go-round. You’d think the merry-go-round would be gentle, but it was the sketchiest thing I’ve ever ridden. There weren’t any seat belts and the horses would go slowly up, up, up and then DOWN! I’ve been obsessing over it for two days and I can’t think of a single thing about a ferris wheel that could hurt a pregnant mom or baby.
Grievance #3
When we were in California last month, Devan and 3 other guys he works with all got tickets for not wearing their seat belts. The police officer said that he had until July 15th to pay it and that it would be $25, although there was no price anywhere on the ticket. So, we finally got an official notice explaining how to pay the ticket and the price is $150! He got the ticket on 5/26, this notice is postmarked 6/18, and it is due 7/15. So, they wait nearly a month to inform us that the ticket is actually six times the amount the police officer said it would be and by the time the notice comes we have less than a month to come up with the extra money. I dug around a little online and apparently that's normal in California. They tack on all sorts of other fees and you end up paying way more than the cost of the violation. I hate California!
I hate how unjust the world is and I hate these pregnancy hormones that are making me take everything so personally!
A couple of weeks ago Hannah and I went to visit our family in Washington. We left Friday afternoon and got home Wednesday morning. The last time Hannah rode in an airplane was right around her first birthday, so she doesn't remember it, of course, but she loves airplanes. She can spot them from far, far away, and she's always talking about Grandpa, and Grandma, and Kory, and Renee who go on the airplane.
She was very excited to be on the plane. As we were waiting to take off she said, "Hannah airplane...so fun!"
She did not, however, like sitting down and being buckled. We were both pretty relieved when the ride was over.
On Saturday, my mom and I walked the Sound to Narrows at Point Defiance park. It was a 12k, which supposedly translates into 7.46 miles. In ways, it was better and worse than I expected. I finished it, which I wasn't sure I'd be able to do. My only goal starting out was to get done in less than 3 hours. We came in at 2 hours and 40 minutes, taking a couple of breaks along the way to wait in line for a port-o-potty. For me, the first mile and the last mile were the hardest part. The first mile is all downhill, but it's in the sun and even at 9 in the morning I was baking. I was having way more contractions than I usually do on walks and I was getting scared for the next 6 miles. But as soon as we got onto 5-mile-drive it was nice and shady and we didn't have any trouble. That last mile uphill was rough too, but we made it and were rewarded with yogurt, muffins, oranges, and water bottles at the finish line.
Saturday was a hot, hot day and I don't like visiting states where people don't have air conditioning. So, Hannah and I had a nice campout on the trampoline. It reaffirmed my belief that sleeping outside as often as possible is good for your soul.
My mom had a bbq for us on Sunday and invited all my uncles and aunts on both sides of the family. It was so nice to see everyone. It would have been a great photo opportunity, but I failed to take a single picture.
Monday and Tuesday were filled with time with the grandparents, trips to the park, and baseball games. It was lovely. As always, the trip flew by, but these days I'm very happy when the week goes quickly by. 5 more weeks to due date!
This was just a little game Hannah taught everyone.

I've had these pictures loaded nearly three weeks now, but haven't been able to think about anything clever to say about our last few days in California. So, here they are and we can move on.
If you look really closely, you can see the Hollywood sign up on the hill.
The day before we drove home, Devan didn't have to work and we were able to play. I didn't bother putting Hannah's swimsuit on since she hadn't gone in the ocean all week. I guess all she needed was her dad being there.
As usual, Devan spent most of his beach time playing in the sand.
I was pretty impressed with what he created.
We had a great trip. Hannah's favorite part was the hotel pool. I think she'll be a good little swimmer someday. She'd walk around on the pool stairs and every once in a while she'd trip and her head would go under, but she'd pull herself back up and say, "I'm okay Mommy." She stayed calm and never swallowed water or choked.
