Sleep-Deprived-Catch-Up

It's so late and I'm so very tired, so I've made myself a deal that I'll just write until the labtop dies or the baby needs feeding, then I'll push "publish". We'll see how this goes.

August 13

Hannah got into my bottle of mascara, again. I keep moving it higher and higher and she keeps finding ways to get into things. I don't know the solution. She actually did a pretty good job, so this time I fixed the mistakes and helped her finish. Look at those long, beautiful eyelashes!

That night we went to the park. I felt like a pretty bad mom taking my 2 year old out with mascara on.

The next day we went to the park with the cousins

And there goes Ben. More to come someday.

Hannah Goes Jump, Jump, Jump

I heard about this jumping play place for kids so I took Hannah yesterday. She's been feeling very cooped up lately and I'm such a wimp about the heat. We had such a fun time. We stayed for 2 and a half hours before I convinced her she was hungry enough to leave.

She played on this slide for about a half hour straight. There were 4 bigger kids who were probably 5 to 8 and she chased them up the ladder and down the slide over and over again. They'd scream and run away and she'd scream and run after them. They were all really nice to her. It was so funny to watch.

They had a bunch of those little coin operated rides. She never figured out that they move, but they were one of her favorite parts.

For some reason this hit me hard. She took a break from playing and went to get a drink all by herself. What a big girl.

And this was my favorite part of the whole day!

She went down that slide over and over and over.

We bought a pass so we can go back as much as we want this month. This morning out of the blue she said, "I had fun jumping. Go back?" What a cute kid.

What's going on with Ben

10 days old

On Monday I took Ben in for his 2 week checkup. I picked a new doctor that my midwife recommended and I'm so happy we made the switch. For one thing, her office is only a half mile from our house so we're able to walk to appointments. The office was very friendly and welcoming and I just loved the doctor. She was very kind and gave some great advice on helping Hannah adjust to the new baby even though it wasn't Hannah's appointment and she seems like she's going to be good about letting me make my own decisions about my kids' care.

Ben seems to be growing well. He's 9 pounds 2 ounces already, which puts him in the 65th percentile. I would have thought it would have been a higher percentile than that, but that's probably only because Hannah was in the 3rd percentile up until her first birthday. He's in the 80th percentile for height. He's a long, long baby.

I haven't written much about Ben yet, so I have to say, he's a delight! I think it helped that he learned how to eat so quickly. He eats about every 2 hours during the day and I'm not sure how often at night because I stay half asleep while I feed him. But even at night he fusses just a little when he wants to eat and then goes right back to sleep. I haven't had to cry to Devan for help in the middle of the night once since the night we brought him home. That's big for us. It's only been two weeks and I know that it will get harder as he gets older and is awake more, but so far we've gotten really lucky. I was geared up for it to be so so hard that I'm pleasantly surprised about how well we're surviving. I have to admit that I am more tired all the time than I imagined I'd be, but I feel like, in spite of that, I'm functioning better than I thought I would. And...I already miss being pregnant. How scary is that?

Ben's First Camping Trip

Last weekend (August 6-8), Ben got to go on his first camping trip. I've been wanting to go all summer, but we're always busy on the weekends. Since we have a new baby and had gotten out of all our responsibilities this weekend, I decided we should get out of town while we had the chance.

We got there as it was getting dark on Friday night, so we just set up the tent and went to bed. We were lucky to have a little girl to gather our fire wood the next morning.

After breakfast we went on a little hike to a lake.

This isn't a good picture of us, but look at the pretty lake.

After lunch we went to the Provo River Falls. We've visited here every summer since Hannah was born. It gets a little harder every year. We always start down lower and get to see 3 water falls on our little climb to the top. It was a lot simpler before Hannah could run.

All Hannah wanted to do was play in the icy cold mountain water.

By the time we were done at the falls it was time to go back to camp and cook dinner. This is what Hannah looks like after 24 hours of not even having her hands washed.

And then when she takes out her ponytail.

The smores were one of those things that I think will be more fun to remember doing than they actually were to do.

But we must not have learned our lesson because we ate more marshmallows for breakfast the next morning.

We had a great time and I'm really glad we went. Usually after a camping trip I want to go again right away, but this time I think I got my fill...for a while at least.
